Hillcats Drop Opener to Rangers, 4-2

ALVA, Okla. - The Rogers State baseball team dropped game one of the three-game series against Northwestern Oklahoma State, 4-2, at Myers Stadium in Alva, Okla. on Friday evening.  

The Hillcats compiled just four hits in the nine inning affair while NWOSU strung together nine hits and never trailed in the contest.

The Rangers dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out RBI single by George Mendoza. NWOSU added to its lead in the fifth frame. With two outs, Jared Moore doubled to keep the inning alive and Jonathan Freemyer followed with a first-pitch home run over the center field fence to take a 3-0 lead.

RSU answered in the eight, cutting the Rangers lead to 3-2. With bases loaded, Colton Campbell belted a double to right field, allowing a pair of runs to score.  

NWOSU tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out triple to left field. Ranger closer, Derek Epps, faced the minimum in the top of the ninth to seal the win.

Shawn Spainhoward suffered the loss on the mound for the Cats, allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in seven innings of work. Tyler Garner tossed the eighth and allowed one run on one hit, fanning one.

Jason Martyn earned the win as he tossed 7.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with seven walks.

Rogers State (28-9, 11-8) will round out the three-game series against the Rangers on Saturday with a twin bill slated to start at 1 p.m.
