Softball Cats Split with Grand View

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team rounded out its four-game series with Grand View (Iowa) on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader at Claremore High School Softball Complex.

The Hillcats tallied a 4-2 come from behind win in the opening game against the Vikings to take the series. However, Grand View avoided the sweep with a 4-0 win the nightcap, handing the Hillcats their first loss of the season. RSU won the first two games of the series on Saturday afternoon.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats rallied late in the game to register a 4-2 victory in the opener. The Vikings dented the scoreboard in the first frame with an RBI single by Ryan Jehle. Dacia Miller gave the Vikings a 2-0 advantage in the top of the fourth with a solo shot over the center field fence. The Cats answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a pass ball to cut the deficit to 2-1.

RSU held the Vikings scoreless the rest of the way and took the lead in the sixth inning. With bases loaded, Taran Threet doubled off the wall in center and sent two runs across home plate. RSU scored its final run of the inning thanks to a dropped fly ball by the GVU outfield.

Ashley Wailand (2-0) tossed the complete-game victory in the circle for the Cats. The senior right-handed hurler allowed two runs on five hits with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

Grand View broke the scoreless tie in the third thanks to back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Jehle and Anna Arnold, giving the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

Caitlyn Carmichael registered a RBI single in the fourth. Morgan Powers led off the sixth with a single and scored on a RBI single by Ashley Flowers to push the Vikings lead to 4-0.

The Hillcat offense couldn't get anything going in the nightcap, sprinkling just four hits over seven innings while the Viking recorded 12 hits.

Jessica Stickel registered the complete-game shutout victory in the circle for the Vikings allowing just four hits while fanning 11 Hillcats. A'Lex Koonce suffered the loss for the Cats, allowing five hits and three unearned runs in 3.1 innings of work.

Rogers State (7-1) returns to action on March 2-3 as the Hillcats compete in the Friends University Tournament in Witchita, Kan.
