No. 9 Hillcats Push Past No. 13 Pioneers, 84-73

CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 9 Rogers State gave those in attendance at the Claremore Expo a gift as the hometown Hillcats topped No. 13-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene, 84-73, Saturday afternoon.

Senior point guard Ken Holdman claimed his first double-double as a Hillcat. The Oral Roberts transfer tied his RSU career high with 21 points.  His 10 rebounds also marked a career high in a Hillcat uniform.

Holdman and the Hillcats other four senior guards totaled 76 points with all five reaching double-figure scoring individually.

MNU held an early six point advantage but a three-pointer from Donald Williams gave RSU a 12-9 lead just 4:13 into the contest. The Hillcats wouldn't relinquish the lead the remainder of the game. Coach Justin Barkley's squad would hold a 19 point advantage twice in the first stanza, the first time off three free throws from Holdman with 6:47 to go before the intermission. At the half the Cats led 45-32.

A pair of Justynn Hammond free throws with 9:11 left in the game gave RSU its largest lead of the night at 69-48. The Pioneers weren't finished as the visitors went on a 20-7 run over the next eight minutes to pull the game to 76-68. RSU shot six-of-eight from the charity stripe to close out the 84-73 victory.

MidAmerica Nazarene (11-4) was led in scoring by Luke Thomas off the bench with 16 points.

Williams chipped in 15 points for the Hillcats while Kendrell Thompson totaled 14 before fouling out with 4:54 remaining. Alex Ewings added 13 points as did Justynn Hammond off the bench. RSU shot 48.2 percent from the field knocking down 53.6 percent in the first half. The Cats started the game hitting 7-of-7 from behind the arc but cooled to shot 44.4 percent from three-point range.
