Claremore, Okla. - The Rogers State women's basketball team dominated overtime and registered a thrilling 77-68 victory over St. Gregory's on Saturday afternoon at the Claremore Expo.
RSU held the Lady Cavs to just one field goal in overtime as it outscored SGU 12-3 to escape with the win. With less than a minute remaining in extra time, Logan Froese hit a layup off a Sasha Barnes assist to give the Hillcats some breathing room and a 75-68 advantage. Leticia Silva converted the front side of her free throw attempts with 30 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to seven points but Ariani Silva sealed with win for the Cats at the charity stripe, making both her shots.
The Hillcats held a six point advantage with 4:30 to play but the Lady Cavaliers used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one point with three minutes to play in regulation. Brittany Joseph gave SGU the lead with a pair of made free throws with 1:12 to play. Ariani Silva converted the backside of her free throw attempts to knot the score 65-65 with 19 seconds remaining. SGU was unable to get a shot off in the final seconds of the game, sending it to overtime.
The game was knotted seven times in the first frame with RSU registering a 35-32 lead at the break. RSU opened the game with a 12-6 advantage; however SGU followed with a 9-3 run to tie the game 15-15 with 13 minutes to play in the half. The teams traded buckets the rest of the way.
For the second consecutive game, Sierra Cornwell tallied six steals. The Twin Hills, Okla. native also added 13 points and two assists. Leah Smith led all scorers with a career-high 24 points. Gianna Woods rounded out the double digit scorers with 14 points.
The Hillcats tallied 12 steals as the Lady Cavs committed 21 turnovers.
Rogers State (15-7, 9-5) will return to action on Thursday as it hosts the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at the Claremore Expo at 6 p.m. Live video and audio will be streamed at www.rsuhillcats .com/live.
