LUBBOCK, Texas – In the opening game of the West Texas Swing the Hillcat women looked off beat falling to No. 9 Lubbock Christian 87-70 inside the Rip Griffin Center on Thursday.
The Lady Chaparrals built a first half lead of 16 points with 2:32 remaining in the period. LCU finished the opening stanza up, 45-33 at the intermission.
The second period was much of the same as LCU held a double-digit lead up until the 3:42 mark as a Leah Smith 3-pointer trimmed the Lady Chaps lead to 77-68. The Lady Chaps closed out the contest on a 10-2 run for the 87-70 victory.
RSU committed 25 fouls to the Lady Chaps 14 personal fouls. The Hillcat women connected on just 60 percent from the charity stripe while LCU drilled 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
Lubbock Christian (13-3, 10-0) was led in scoring by Emily Atkins as she dropped 18 of her game high 25 points in the second period. Kelsey Canavan and Nicole Hampton added 16 apiece while Brittany Roberts tallied 15.
Leah Smith led the way for the Hillcats with 17 points as Gianna Woods recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Rogers State (12-7, 6-5) turns around quickly facing the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens Saturday for a 1 p.m. start time in Plainview, Texas. The game will be broadcast on www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
