Softball Cats Split with Lady Drovers

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team settled for a doubleheader split against the University of Science and Arts on Tuesday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex in Claremore.

RSU dropped game one, 2-1. The Hillcats then controlled the nightcap with five runs in fifth inning and sailed to an 8-0 run-rule victory.

GAME ONE

The Drovers slipped past the Cats in the opener as they posted the game winning run in the top of the seventh inning.

RSU took an early 1-0 advantage in the second inning as Logan Zamora belted a two-out homer over the left field fence.

In the fifth inning, the Drover had runners on first and third when Sara Reeves was caught in a run down at first base. Katie Bointy was able to tag Reeves out however, it allowed Markie Laferney to score from third base.

USAO earned the game-winning run in the top of the seventh with a RBI single by Reeves.

Amanda Edwards suffered the loss in the circle for RSU as she tossed the complete game. The right-handed hurler allowed two unearned runs on three hits and struck out one hitter.  Neesha Sorrells (12-7) garnered the win for the Drovers as she tossed the complete contest and allowed one run on three hits with seven strikeouts.

Zamora was the only Hillcat with multiple hits in the game. The senior from Sun City, Calif. went 2-for-3 with a home run. Senior Sarah Harvey registered the only other hit in the game for RSU.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats cruised past the Drovers in the nightcap with an 8-0 run-rule.

Sophomore Ashlie Fauchier hit a two RBI single in the second inning to give the Cats an early advantage.

A big fifth inning gave the Cats the momentum. The Hillcats loaded the bases and USAO short stop Ally Richardson bobbled the ball which allowed Brittany White to score and Shelby Brogdon was safe at first base.   Zamora belted a grand slam over the centerfield fence to give the Cats 7-0 lead.

RSU retired the side in the top of the sixth and ended the game early in the bottom of the inning with one run to complete the 8-0 run-rule.

Edwards (15-9) tossed the complete game shutout for the Hillcats. The sophomore allowed just four hits while fanning one hitter.    Brooke McLeod (4-7) suffered the loss for USAO as she gave up eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits with two strikeouts.

Rogers State (25-16, 5-9) will continue Sooner Athletic Conference play on Thursday as it hosts Northwestern Oklahoma State at Hillcat Complex. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM and on www.rsuhillcats.com.
