Bison Outrun Hillcats in Doubleheader

SHAWNEE, Okla. - Rogers State softball dropped two games on the road at Lady Bison Field on Thursday in Shawnee, Okla.

The Lady Bison were able to put up an 8-1 victory in game one as OBU got 13 hits while the Hillcats committed three errors while only tallying four hits. The night cap of the twin bill saw RSU post 12 hits but still lose 9-6.

GAME ONE

Oklahoma Baptist was held scoreless in the home half of the first inning before posting eight runs in the next five innings.

The Hillcats left two runners stranded in the visitors half of the second inning after Noelle McDowell walked two batters. The scoring got going in the bottom of the second for OBU with one run. In the next three innings the Lady Bison posted one run in each inning.

RSU got on the board in the top of the fifth as Dina Ortiz scored from third on a Brittany White ground out. The Hillcats stranded two runners in the inning and left a total of seven on base for the game.

OBU posted four runs in the sixth inning as Ashley Clifton singled through the left side to score Alyssa Henkes. Alison Tunnell singled to left field scoring two Bison as Tunnell finished with three RBI in game one. Theresa Garcia's RBI ground out scored Sonya Beach to put the game at 8-1. The Hillcats' Ashlie Fauchier singled up the middle with one out to reach base but was left stranded as OBU was able to retire the side and seal the win.

Amanda Edwards (18-12) received the loss after giving up four runs, three earned on nine hits as she walked three and struck out two. Ashley Wailand gave up four runs, two earned on four hits in just one inning pitched.

Noelle McDowell (16-6) earned the win giving up one earned run on four hits, sitting down seven and walking four.

GAME TWO

OBU jumped to an early 5-0 lead after the second inning on five hits and one Hillcat error.

RSU trimmed the hometown Bison lead to three runs when Shelby Brogdon was walked with bases loaded scoring White. Taran Threet hit a sacrifice fly to left field scoring Fauchier. Edwards was forced out at third on a fielder's choice ground ball by Dina Ortiz.

Three insurance runs for the Lady Bison came in the fourth inning as Amanda Harmon doubled to right center scoring Krystal Johnson. Ashley Clifton singled down the leftfield line scoring two and stretching the OBU lead to 8-2 after four.

The Hillcats answered in the top of the fifth as White reached home on a throwing error by the Bison's Abbey Basler. OBU gave its own response with a sac-fly by Johnson to score Basler and put the home squad up 9-3.

RSU was able to put up a fight in the top of the seventh. Fauchier reached on a single and moved to second on an Edwards single. Brogdon singled to center to load the bases. Threet grounded out scoring Fauchier and moving the runners into scoring position. Ortiz singled to centerfield scoring Edwards and moving Brogdon to third. Katrina Loy singled to right to score Brogdon and move Ortiz to second. OBU brought in Cassidi Henderson to pitch, replacing Sonya Beach. Henderson was able to retire Linsey Curtis on a fly ball to center and secure the 9-6 win as RSU scored three runs on five hits in the final stanza.

Beach (3-3) earned the win giving up six runs, five earned on 12 hits walking just one and issuing no strike outs in six and two-thirds innings.

Katie Bointy (1-2) received the loss going three complete innings giving up eight runs, six earned on nine hits. The Anadarko, Okla. native struck out two and walked one before moving to first base after facing three batters in the fourth inning. Edwards came in for three innings of relief allowing one run on two hits and striking out two.

Rogers State (32-22, 9-13) won't play again until Saturday, April 30 at Hillcat Complex as Oklahoma City comes to town for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
