KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Rogers State men's basketball team is slated to take on the No. 3 seed Mountain State in the quarterfinals at the Buffalo-Funds NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship on Saturday, March 19 at 6 p.m. inside Municipal Auditorium.
Mountain State (29-3) advanced to the quarterfinals with an, 84-67, win over Lindenwood (Mo.). They defeated Park (Mo.) on Wednesday in the opening round, 83-58. The Cougars received an automatic bid to the tournament by winning the 2011 Association of Independent Institutions tournament as they defeated, Life University, an at-large qualifier to the NAIA tournament.
Standing at 7-foot-8, Mountain State reserve Paul Sturgess is the tallest player in college basketball. David Nyarsuk, 7-foot-1 freshman, is one of the NAIA's leaders in blocked shots with 91 on the season while adding 10.6 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. Doug Wiggins, a junior guard, leads the team in scoring as he averages 14 points per game.
Senior John Boyd continues to pace the Hillcats in their magical run through the NAIA Tournament. The Wagoner, Okla. native averages almost 17 points per game and seven rebounds.
The Cats (22-11) are one of two unseeded teams left in the Dance. In its second round win over Carroll College, RSU held the Fighting Saints to 45 points, the second lowest point total in program history. The Cats held Wayland Baptist to 44 points earlier this season on Feb. 24.
The winner of tonight's contest will square off against the winner of No. 7 seeded Georgetown (Ky.) and No. 2 seeded Concordia (Calif.) on Monday, March 21 at 8 p.m. inside Municipal Auditorium.
