Diamond Cats Prove to be Cardiac Cats

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State baseball claimed the series victory over Wayland Baptist with a 6-5 win Friday at the Hillcat Complex.

The victory didn't come easy for the Hillcats who overcame a three error sixth inning and came alive in the bottom half of the ninth to snatch the victory from the hands of the Pioneers.

Trailing 5-4 heading into the Hillcat half of the ninth inning, Payden Yarmer pinch hit for Kevin Radford to lead off and capitalized with a double down the leftfield line to the fence. Radford re-entered the contest and moved to third on the next pitch when Keith Poverud's sacrifice bunt rolled just outside of the batter's box and the Pioneers came up short on the fielder's choice.

Catcher Lance Rymel came to the plate with runners on the corners and facing a new pitcher for WBU as Ryan Stuck came in relief of Kevin Burbank who had pitched a complete game to that point, finishing with 137 pitches.

Stuck's first pitch was wild moving Poverud from first to second base and putting both runners in scoring position for Rymel. The Broken Arrow, Okla. native capitalized with a two RBI single in shallow left center field scored Radford and Poverud, giving RSU the 6-5 victory.

Wayland posted the first run of the game when a sac-bunt by Oscar Rivera scored Brian Embery, who doubled to begin the second inning.

RSU responded in the bottom half of the second as Radford and Poverud scored on a two RBI double by Rymel, who reached third on the throw home. Taylor Estes, courtesy running for Rymel, scored on a RBI double by Jairo Valdez. The Hillcats held the 3-1 lead after two innings.

Embery opened the fourth with a first pitch homerun to right field for the Pioneers. Nic Shadle doubled and then reached home as Oscar Rivera was thrown out at first on his hard hit to short stop and tied the contest at 3-3.

Valdez scored in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by McKewon to centerfield, giving RSU back the lead 4-3.

Wayland answered with a two run top of the sixth as Shadle singled to left field scoring Kevin Hennessey from second base. Shadle moved to scoring position on an error and eventually scored on an error in the outfield. After the sixth inning was said and done the Hillcats had recorded three errors in the inning, gave up two runs and the lead.

Tyler Brown (4-0) claimed the victory for RSU after entering in the seventh inning giving up one hit and striking out one. Grant Cosby pitched six innings allowing four earned runs off eight hits and struck out two.

Kevin Burbank had a near complete game for the Pioneers going eight innings and started the ninth. Burbank gave up six earned runs on six hits, struck out three and walked three.

Rymel finished the game going 2-of-4 with three RBI while going the complete game behind the plate. McKewon had five assists without an error for at the hot corner.

Rogers State (23-4, 7-2) will head on the road Tuesday, March 22 to Muskogee, Okla. to face Bacone College in a double-header at 1 p.m.
