Long Ball Launches Hillcats Past Langston

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team picked up its fourth twin bill sweep of the season on Tuesday night as the Cats recorded a pair of win against Langston University at Hillcat Complex.

The Hillcats used a trio of homes runs to register an 8-3 victory in the opener and closed out the night with an 8-4 victory.

GAME ONE

Senior Dina Ortiz belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to put the Cat on the board first. It was the third home run of the season for the Monahans, Texas native.

The Hillcats lead was short lived as the Lady Lions used four hits to claim a 3-2 advantage in the top of the third.  RSU quickly tied the score in the bottom half of the inning as freshman Taran Threet led off the inning with a solo shot over the center field fence. The blasted was the Wellston, Okla. native's first collegiate home run.  Sophomore Ashlie Fauchier followed with a single and advanced to home on three pass balls by Langston catcher, Priscilla Arzaga and RSU took a 4-3 lead.

The Hillcats led the rest of the way and pushed the lead to 7-3 in the fifth. Logan Zamora led off the inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Amanda Edwards.  Linsey Curtis followed with a double down the left field line and Katrina Loy blasted her fourth home run of the season to give the Cats some breathing room.

RSU tacked on one final insurance run in the sixth with and RBI-single by Edwards.

Ashley Wailand (4-1) garnered the win in the circle. The junior right-handed pitcher tossed a complete game allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Lady Lions struck first in the nightcap as Jasmine Wilson hit a RBI single off the wall in right field. However, Zamora knotted up the score in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot over the center field fence. It was the senior's fourth home run of the season.

Both teams added a pair of runs in the second inning to keep the scored tied but the Cats took a 5-3 lead with two runs in the third. Loy doubled and then crossed home plate with a double by Threet. Shelby Brogdon knocked Threet in with a single off the wall in center field.

A pair of errors in the top of the fifth allowed the Lady Lions to plate a run but the Hillcat got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. RSU added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to secure the 8-4 victory.

Amanda Edwards earned the win as she pitched four and one third innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits while fanning four batters. Wailand registered her first save of the season as she held the Lady Lions scoreless over the final two and two third innings.
