LUBBOCK, Texas - The Rogers State women not only claimed an 80-75 victory Saturday afternoon over No. 22 Lubbock Christian but also claimed sole possession of the fourth seed in the upcoming Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.
RSU trailed by as many as 12 in the first half of the matinee SAC contest and entered the intermission down to LCU 41-36. The Hillcats opened the second period with a 6-0 start on a jumper by Andrea Miles. Cortney Crockett nailed a pair of free throws with 14:35 remaining in the game to give the Hillcats a six point lead on a 14-3 run. Crockett had 13 second half points finishing with 19 to lead RSU in scoring.
A layup by Whitney Wehmeyer gave LCU back the lead with 11 minutes on the clock. The two teams would tie the game five times over the next eight minutes. Crockett and Angie Criner hit back to back jumpers to give RSU a four point advantage with 1:54 remaining.
Brittany Hampton hit a pair from the charity stripe to cut the Hillcat lead to two with 1:06 to go. That's when senior Hunter Peterson nailed a jumper from the right baseline over a Lady Chaps defender as the shot clock was winding down giving RSU the 77-73 lead. LCU was forced to foul to close out the game and the Cats held on to knock-off the No. 22 Lady Chaparrals 80-75.
Lubbock Christian (20-8, 17-5) was led in the scoring column by Hampton and Emily Atkins with 14 apiece. Renee Wilson dropped in 12 points while April Ehlers added 10. The Lady Chaps turned the ball over 21 times and shot 67 percent from the charity stripe.
Criner finished with 14 points while Hunter Peterson had a perfect shooting day going 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from the free throw line closing out the day with 13 points. Andrea Miles and Logan Froese both added in 11 points to round out the double-figure scoring for RSU. The Hillcat women shot 77 percent from the charity stripe.
Rogers State (21-8, 15-7) returns to Claremore in preparation of the SAC tournament beginning on March 3 and running through March 5. The opening round game will be carried on RSU Radio 91.3FM.
