CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State women's basketball team took care of business on Saturday afternoon inside the Claremore Expo as they downed Sooner Athletic Conference foe John Brown 72-64 to complete the regular season sweep.
Junior Ariani Silva poured in the last seven points of the game for the Hillcats as she scored a career-high 23 points, finishing three points shy of the single-game scoring record set by Azzie Knox during the 2008-09 season. Silva hit a 3-pointer from the corner to push the Cats lead to nine points with two minutes to play and sunk a pair of free throws on the Hillcats next possession to give them their first double figure lead, 70-59. With 16 seconds to play she sealed the win as she converted two free throws.
The Hillcats trailed by five points at the break however, they quickly gained the advantage after intermission. Gianna Woods posted back-to-back buckets to cut the deficit to one point. RSU took the lead with just under 15 minutes to play with two made free throws by senior Sasha Barnes. Brittani Smith and Leah Smith followed with a pair of treys to give the Hillcats a 50-42 advantage.
RSU held onto the lead the rest of the way. The Hillcats grabbed 12 steals as the Golden Eagles committed 20 turnovers. The Cats edged JBU on the boards 35-30. Coach Amy Williams' squad shot a season-best 57 percent from behind the arc, led by Silva who made 5-of-6 from long distance.
Leah Smith was the only other Hillcat in double figures as she finished with 16 points.
Rogers State (9-3, 3-1) will break for the Holidays and return to Sooner Athletic Conference play on New Year's Eve as they take on St. Gregory's at 3 p.m. at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse. Live audio streaming will be provided at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
