CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State women's basketball team registered a 64-43 victory over Wayland Baptist in its Sooner Athletic Conference home opener on Thursday night at the Claremore Expo.
Juniors Logan Froese and Leah Smith poured in 18 points apiece to lead all scorers. Froese turned in 10 points during the first stanza, despite missing pregame warm-ups due to academic obligations. The Claremore, Okla. native posted her final bucket of the half at the buzzer to push the Hillcats lead to 32-22.
The Flying Queens opened the game with a 6-2 run. Smith cut the deficit with a bucket from long distance and Ariani Silva gave the Cats the lead with a layup. The score was knotted four times in the opening half before the Hillcats took the lead for good with a 12-2 run going into intermission.
The Cats opened the second half with a 5-0 run but WBU rallied with an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to seven points. However, Froese hit back-to-back-buckets followed by a pair of treys by Smith to spark a 19-6 run by the Cats, spanning over eight minutes of action. The Hillcats held onto their 20 point advantage for the remainder of the game.
The Hillcats were 12-of-16 from the Charity stripe and nabbed 10 steals. RSU won the battle on the boards 46-36, led by senior Gianna Woods with eight boards. The Hillcats bested the Flying Queens in bench production, outscoring WBU 37-11.
Roger State (7-2, 2-0) returns to conference action at the Claremore Expo on Saturday against Lubbock Christian at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed live at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
