Lionesses Tame Hillcats, 66-58

LANGSTON, Okla. – Rogers State women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season to Langston, 66-58, at C.F. Gayles' Fieldhouse Wednesday night.


After trailing by ten points to the Lionesses at the midway point of the first half the Hillcat women were able to cut the score to three points with just 3:30 remaining in the period. RSU continued to chip away with an 8-0 run to take the lead 26-23 with 1:20 prior to intermission. Langston knotted the score at 26-26 with a 3 pointer by Ayanna Jackson to enter half time.


With 12 minutes remaining Sasha Barnes hit a fifteen foot jump shot from the right baseline to put the Hillcats up by eight. From there the Lionesses went on a 21-7 run over the next eight minutes as hit a 3 pointer. Brittani Smith responded with a 3 pointer of her own to cut the Langston lead to three points 56-53. LU moved the lead back to eight points over the next minute and a half with a 3 pointer by Tayla Vaughn. Langston held on over the final 2:35 to claim the 66-58 victory over No. 24 RSU.


Shontice Simmons led all scorers with 22 points for the Lionesses. No. 19 Langston (1-0) out rebounded the Hillcats 43-35, while knocking down 53 percent from behind the arc. LU scored 21 more points than RSU from 3-point land.


RSU was led in scoring by Logan Froese as the junior forward tallied 13 points and pulled in eight boards. Gianna Woods and Sasha Barnes added 11 points each. The Hillcats shot just 17 percent on 3-pointers while knocking in 79 percent from the charity stripe.


Rogers State (2-1) will make its Claremore Expo debut on Saturday for Hillcat Homecoming against Friends University (Kan.) at 2 p.m. The game will be carried live on www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
