Caraballo's Cycle Carries Cats Past Evangels, 14-4

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Senior Luis Caraballo hit for the cycle as Rogers State cruised past Mid-America Christian for a 14-4 victory Thursday afternoon at Evangel Field in Oklahoma City.

Caraballo became just the second Hillcat player to ever hit for the cycle. Ryan Littlejohn was the first to accomplish the feat in 2007.

RSU jumped on the Evangels early with six runs in the top of the second inning. Caraballo delivered the big blow with a three-run single up the middle. Zach Hamby and Colton West followed with consecutive RBI doubles to make it 7-1.

The trio of Caraballo, Hamby and West feasted on MACU pitching throughout the day. Caraballo lifted a solo homer to right-center in the fourth, Hamby doubled and West singled to stretch the lead to 9-1. The 3-4-5 hitters in the RSU lineup combined to go 11 for 15 at the plate with 10 RBI and eight runs scored.

Needing a triple to complete the cycle when he came to the plate in the eighth, Caraballo jumped on a 2-2 pitch and swatted it down the right-field line. Rob Rodriguez added a two-run homer in the ninth to cap the scoring onslaught.

Grant Cosby (7-3) earned the pitching victory with another solid outing. The senior right-hander scattered 12 hits across seven innings while striking out four. Sophomore Josh Phillippi gave up just one run over the final two innings to complete the win.

MACU starter Thomas Peabody was chased from the game in the fourth inning after yielding nine runs, three earned, on nine hits. Three Evangel relievers combined to give up five additional runs over the final 5.1 innings.

Rogers State (24-18, 11-14) will complete its three-game series with Mid-America Christian (16-25, 6-17) with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Claremore. First pitch from the Hillcat Complex in scheduled for 1 p.m.
