SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team picked up another win over a ranked opponent as the Hillcats split a doubleheader with No. 14 St. Gregory's Thursday in Shawnee, Okla.
Â
The Cats belted two home runs en route to an 8-3 victory in the opener. The Lady Cavaliers responded with three runs in the first inning of the nightcap and held off a seventh-inning rally by RSU to post a 6-4 win.
GAME ONE
Â
The Hillcats overcame a rough first inning to take game one going away. The Lady Cavs touched RSU starter Taryn Hernandez for three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. However, Hernandez settled in after the rocky start and didn't allow another run the rest of the way.
Â
The Cats took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the third. Hernandez started the at-bat with a double and Jodi Patterson capped it with an RBI single. Shelby Brogdon homered in the top of the fifth to make it 6-3 and Hernandez added a solo shot in the seventh to pad the lead. It marked the 11th and 14th homers of the season for the players, respectively.
Â
Hernandez earned the win by sprinkling 12 hits across seven innings of work. The lefty struck out four and walked one while giving up three earned runs. Jessica Heaney took the loss for the Cavaliers in a complete-game performance.
GAME TWO
Â
St. Gregory's again started the game with a three-run first inning in the nightcap, but this time the Hillcats could not complete the comeback.
Â
A two-run single by Tara Nall made it 3-0 Lady Cavs in the first. Katie Bointy doubled home Jordan Ford in the second inning to cut the lead to two. However, SGU answered with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Â
RSU mounted another rally with three runs in the top of the seventh. Brittany White slapped a two-run double to right-centerfield to make it 6-4, but Hernandez grounded out to end the threat just two pitches later.
Â
Hernandez (14-5) suffered the loss after giving up six runs, five earned, in six innings of work. Nicole Bush earned the win for St. Gregory's with 6.2 innings of work for the Cavaliers. White tallied two of the Hillcats' five hits in the contest.
