Hillcats Whip Wayland Baptist Women, 61-47

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State avenged a January loss to Wayland Baptist by pounding the Flying Queens, 61-47, at the Claremore Expo Thursday night.

Freshman Logan Froese turned in the best of performance of her young career with 19 points in the victory. The Claremore High School product poured in 13 second half points as the Hillcats stretched a seven-point halftime lead into a decisive 14-point win.

RSU opened the game on a 10-0 run and led 27-12 with three minutes to play in the first half. However, WBU closed the half on an 8-0 streak to cut the deficit to 27-20 at the break. The Hillcats shot 50 percent from the field in the first period, but the Queens limited their opportunities with an 18-11 rebounding advantage. The teams combined for 27 turnovers in the first half alone.

WBU's Megan Coats cut the RSU lead to three with a jumper at the 15:49 mark of the second half. Hunter Peterson and Holly Birmingham answered with a pair of 3-pointers to squelch the rally. The treys sparked a 15-3 run by the Hillcats, spanning over six minutes of game action. Peterson dropped in another three at the five minute mark to make it 51-39, and the Cats led by double digits the rest of the way.

In addition to her offensive fireworks, Froese grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. She made a living at the charity stripe by hitting 11 of 14 free throws and connected on four of her six field goal attempts. Junior Candice Parker joined Froese in double figures with 10 points. Coats led WBU with 14 points.

The Flying Queens were held to just 31 percent shooting on the night while the Hillcats countered at 45 percent.

Rogers State (19-8, 11-8) moved into a tie for fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings with the victory. The Hillcats will have another opportunity to move up when they host third-place Lubbock Christian Saturday afternoon at the Claremore Expo. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. and the first 750 fans will receive a free Hillcat hand-banner courtesy of the RSU athletic department.
