SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. - The Rogers State men's basketball team ran out of time at John Brown as they fell 80-72 at Bill George Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The game was tight from wire to wire. With under three minutes remaining in the game, JBU tied the score 66-66 with a Ryland Allen bucket from long distance. The Golden Eagles then used sharp-shooting from the charity stripe to build a seven-point cushion and put the game out of reach for the Hillcats in the final two minutes.
Senior Matt Kellogg led the Hillcat is scoring with 23 points. The Albuquerque, N.M. native went 5-for-10 from long distance. Deveric Taylor poured in 16 points and John Boyd added 15 points. In his first action since his knee injury on Nov. 13, 2009, Maurice Rutherford rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points while dishing out four assists and nabbing one steal.
The Hillcats led by as many as seven points in the opening half. JBU cut the Cat's lead to one point with two made free throws by Coleson Rakestraw with fewer than 30 seconds to play in the period. A Hillcat turnover in the final 10 seconds gave JBU one last shot. Andy Garcia converted a layup to give the Golden Eagles the 34-33 advantage at the break.
Five JBU players finished with double-digits scoring, Sam Bartlett led the group with 16 points.
The Cats shot 47-percent from the field and went 3-for 12 from behind the arc in the second half. The Golden Eagles shot 58-percent from the field and shot 23-for-29 from the charity stripe.
Rogers State (5-6, 1-3) will break for the holidays and return to action on Thursday, Dec. 30 in an exhibition contest at the University of Houston. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
