CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's basketball team opened its home slate with a win, cruising past Hillsdale College, 96- 48 at the Claremore Expo on Thursday night.
Both teams got off to a slow start with the Saints earning the first bucket of the game at the 17:15 mark. After trading baskets, the Hillcats took their first lead with a trey by senior Hunter Peterson with 14:54 to play in the half. RSU then used a 9-0 run, capped off by a lay-up by senior Kristy Henderson, to take a 19-10 lead. The Aurora, Colo. native scored 10 points, going 4-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the 3-point line.
The Hillcats ran away with the game from there with a 13-2 run before intermission. RSU took a 41-19 lead into the locker room at the break.
The Cats won the battle on the boards, pulling in 56 rebounds compared to Hillsdale who had 27. RSU was led by Cortney Crockett and Candice Stewart with eight rebounds apiece. The women also tied the school record for blocks with nine on the night. RSU had nine blocks against Mid-America Christian on January 17, 2009. Brittani Smith had a team leading four block, making it her new career record.
Six Hillcats finished with double figures, led by Crockett and Stewart with 14 point apiece. Peterson and Brittani Smith each chipped in 11 points while Logan Froese joined Henderson with 10 points. RSU shot 50 percent from long distance and 49 percent from the floor while hold the Saints to shooting just 30 percent from the field.
The Hillcats (2-0) return to the Expo to commemorate homecoming on Saturday, Nov. 13 as they face Langston at 2 p.m. A tailgate party will begin in the Expo parking lot at 11 a.m. The game will be carried live on RSU Radio and RSU Public T.V.
