PLAINVIEW, Texas - Wayland Baptist took control of the game from the opening tip and led Rogers State wire to wire en route to a 66-58 victory Saturday afternoon at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas.
Inept shooting from the field made it an uphill climb for the Hillcats. RSU shot just 24 percent in the first half. Add to the fact the Hillcats were unable to contain the offensive production of the Flying Queens' Jessica Walker, who scored 11 points in the first half.
RSU was fueled in the second half by the play of Holly Birmingham and Effanesia Baker. Down by ten with just under 13 minutes remaining, the Hillcats were able to cut the deficit to four after three consecutive baskets by Birmingham. The junior guard finished the game with six points, but her flurry of punches seemed to give the Cats a bit of life.
Baker, a sophomore from Dallas, scored all 12 of her points in the final nine minutes of the game to bring RSU within four points with 15 seconds remaining. However, the Hillcats were short on time and were forced to foul the Flying Queens in the closing seconds. WBU converted its final four free throw attempts to stretch the game to its final score of 66-58.
Hunter Peterson led the Hillcats in scoring with 14 points while Baker was the only other RSU player to tally double-digit scoring. Walker led the Flying Queens with a game-high 19 points. Alex Williams was the only other WBU player to score double-digits with 14 points.
The Hillcats outscored the Flying Queens off the bench, 26-11, but shot just 37-percent from the field. RSU didn't fare much better from the charity stripe, shooting 60-percent. Wayland Baptist shot 86-percent from the free throw line.
Rogers State (16-5, 8-5) will head back home to the Claremore Expo Center to face Mid-America Christian Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and the first 250 fans will receive free Hillcat pom poms courtesy of the RSU athletic department. The game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM and RSU Public Television.
