PLAINVIEW, Texas - Rogers State earned its second victory in as many days thanks to another strong offensive performance by Deveric Taylor.
The junior guard came up big in the second half for the second consecutive day as the Hillcats defeated the Wayland Baptist, 61-49, Saturday afternoon at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas.
Taylor scored 14 of his game-high 19 points after halftime. His second half performance offset the first half scoring output of Rishi Kakad for the Pioneers. Kakad tallied 12 points in the first half and finished with 15 for the game.
RSU center Theo Davis scored a career-high nine points and dished a career-high five assists in the contest. Davis broke his own assist record just a day after recording four against Lubbock Christian. The 6-10 junior also tied a career-high with five rebounds in the performance against the Pioneers.
Lance Sullivan was the only other Hillcat to register double-digit points with 15. RSU dominated the interior play, outscoring Wayland Baptist 34-12 in the paint. The Hillcats stopped Kakad in the second half, holding the senior guard to only three points in the period. Jason Griffin scored 10 points for the Pioneers to round out the double-digit scorers.
RSU shot 30-percent from behind the 3-point arc, but bested the Pioneers, who finished the game shooting 11-percent from 3-point range. WBU shot 58-percent from the charity stripe while the Hillcats shot 63-percent at the free throw line.
Rogers State (14-7, 7-6) will face Mid-America Christian Thursday night at the Claremore Expo Center. Tip time is set for 8 p.m. and the first 250 fans will receive a free Hillcat pom pom courtesy of the RSU athletic department. The game will be carried live on both RSU Radio 91.3 FM and RSU Public Television.
