Fitzgerald Leads RSU Rout of Southwestern College, 9-0

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State junior Des Fitzgerald led a record breaking performance for the Hillcats as they hammered Southwestern College 9-0 Friday night at Soldier Field.

Fitzgerald set an RSU single-game record with four goals and also helped the Cats set a new team mark for goals in match with nine. The forward from Norwich, England, needed just over 38 minutes to accomplish the feat. He gave RSU a 2-0 advantage with goals in the 13th and 17th minute. Fitzgerald assisted TJ Martin on the third goal of the match and then added his final two scores in the 35th minute and the 38th minute. He also set a team record to total points in a match with nine.

Senior Luke Helm picked up the final goal of the first half on an assist from TJ Martin to put RSU in front 6-0 at the break. Coach Derek Larkin emptied his bench for the second period and the reserves picked up right where the starters left off. Sophomore Chase Walker opened the second half scoring with a goal less than two minutes in. Walker then setup junior Trent Baker for a strike in the 58th minute and senior Grant Smith capped the scoring with his first goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 61st minute.

RSU goalies Sean Surridge and Nikola Samac combined for the shutout. Surridge tallied the only save of the match in the first half as the Hillcats outshot Southwestern, 31-2.

Rogers State (7-1) extended its winning streak to seven games and will take a day off before hosting Ottawa University Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field. The match is slated for 3 p.m.
