Hillcats Take Series from Evangels with Saturday Split

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Rogers State was unable to complete its second conference sweep of the season as the Hillcats settled for a split against Mid-America Christian Saturday in Oklahoma City.

RSU picked up its fourth Sooner Athletic Conference series win of the year by taking Saturday's opener from the Evangels, 10-5. However, MACU mounted a four-run rally in the fifth inning to post a 4-1 victory in the series finale.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats fell into an early hole before battling back for a 10-5 win in the opener

The Evangels scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead. However, RSU methodically chipped away and assumed control in the top of the sixth.

Rob Rodriguez doubled to start the sixth and cut the lead to 5-4 when he scored on a single by Hank Gray. Coby Wright tied the game with a fielder's choice groundout to score Gray and Zach Hamby gave the Cats a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly to deep right-center.

RSU tacked on four more runs in the top of the seventh. Hamby lifted a two-run single to left and Any Gonell capped the rally with an RBI single to right. Joe Manbodh led the offensive attack with three hits while Hamby, Littlejohn and Rodriguez registered two apiece.

Cristian Baez (2-0-1) earned his second win of the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Starter Randy Jones surrendered five unearned runs in the first inning, but was spotless the rest of the way. Curt Simpson worked a scoreless seventh to complete the win.

GAME TWO

MACU scored four runs with two outs in the fifth inning of the nightcap to steal the final game of the series, 4-1.

After shutting the Evangels out for 10 consecutive innings, things quickly unraveled for the Hillcats in the fifth. Starter Josh Phillippi got two quick groundouts to start the inning, but then loaded the bases with two singles and a hit batsman. Josh Walker relieved Phillpi and promptly hit the next batter to tie the game, 1-1. A two-run single by Kieran Bradford proved to be the game winner for the Evangels. A wild pitch brought home the final run of the inning for MACU.

RSU's only run came in the top of the first as Brandon Denton singled, stole second and scored on a single by Hamby. The Cats managed just two more hits the rest of the day. Doug Kane (2-3) earned the win by tossing five effective innings for the Evangles. Phillippi (2-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Rogers State (22-11, 9-9) traveled to Texas following the doubleheader Saturday. The Diamond Cats played Paul Quinn College in a doubleheader Sunday and Texas Wesleyan in a twin bill Monday afternoon.
