No. 1 Hillcats Lap Lubbock Christian, 81-67

LUBBOCK, Texas - Rogers State came out firing on all cylinders and silenced Lubbock Christian on its home floor with an 81-67 victory in the quarterfinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament Thursday in Lubbock, Texas.

Sylvester Spicer scored 15 of his team-high 19 points in the first half to lead the No. 1 Hillcats past the Chaparrals. Kenny Hewitt poured in a game-high 32 points to keep LCU within striking distance in the second half.

The Hillcats dominated the game from the outset with 52 first half points. Spicer poured in 15 points by connecting on all six of his first half field goal attempts. Sophomores Chris Francis and Matt Kellogg added nine points apiece and teamed up for five 3-pointers before the break.

Francis produced a rare 4-point play when he was fouled on a made 3-pointer with 7:52 left in the period. He made the bonus free throw to cap a 14-2 run and give RSU a 34-15 advantage. Kellogg buried a trey at the halftime buzzer to put the Cats on top 52-31.

RSU shot 59 percent in the first half and scored a season-high 52 first half points. Hewitt, a first-team all-conference selection, tallied 18 points in the first half to keep the game from getting completely out of hand.

A four minute scoring drought by the Hillcats midway through the second half allowed the Chaps to sneak back into the contest. Hewitt hit two free throws with 9:11 remaining to cut the margin to eight. A 3-point play by Douglas Williams with 5:17 left made it 71-64. However, RSU held LCU to only one basket the rest of the way to ensure the victory. Junior Eric Young scored six of his 10 points in the final five minutes of game action.

Francis and Kellogg joined Spicer and Young in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Hillcats shot 57 percent from the field while holding LCU to just 40 percent. The RSU bench outscored the Chaps 36-9 in the contest.

Rogers State (28-1) ended the Chaparrals season with the win and advanced to Friday's semifinal round. The Hillcats will face John Brown Friday evening at the Rip Griffin Center on the LCU campus. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
