Baseball Cats Rip Rangers, 10-0

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State swatted 16 hits on its way to a 10-0 run-rule victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State Friday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex.

The Diamond Cats roughed up the Rangers' pitching staff by scoring at least one run in six of their seven at-bats. Blake Kelley, Zach Hamby and Luis Caraballo ignited a three-run first inning with back-to-back-to-back singles off Northwestern starter Cameron Taylor. Kelley added an RBI double in the second to make it 4-0.

Brandon Denton doubled and scored on a Hamby sacrifice fly in the fourth and Rob Rodriguez and Mitch Guemmer (running for catcher Hank Gray) raced home in the fifth. Hamby led off the sixth inning with a homer to centerfield and Ryan Littlejohn singled and scored later in the inning.

Kevin Phillips and Travis Harold cranked consecutive hits to start the seventh and Caraballo ended the hit-parade with a walk-off single to right-center to reach the run-rule, 10-0. Ten different players recorded at least one hit while five Cats enjoyed multi-hit outings. Hamby led the way with a 3-for-3 afternoon that included three RBI. Denton, Kelley, Caraballo and Coby Wright each finished with two hits.

Sophomore southpaw Sam Cornell dominated the Rangers over the first six innings. He scattered four hits and one walk while striking out three to improve to 2-0 on the season. Randy Jones worked a scoreless seventh to complete the shutout. Taylor suffered the loss for Northwestern after yielding five earned runs over the first four innings.

Rogers State (8-4, 1-3) won its first Sooner Athletic Conference game of the season and broke a three-game losing skid in the process. The Hillcats and Rangers will complete their three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
