Diamond Cats Shutout Coyotes in Doubleheader Sweep

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State pitching staff combined for 14 innings of scoreless baseball as the Hillcats swept Kansas Wesleyan (Salina, Kan.) Saturday in a doubleheader at the Hillcat Complex.

Chris Graves and Cristian Baez teamed up for a two-hit shutout in the opener. RSU plated a run in each of the first two innings for a 2-0 victory. Josh Walker and Jake Taylor closed out a spotless afternoon for the Hillcat hurlers with seven scoreless innings in the nightcap. The Cats scored seven runs in the second inning and cruised to a 9-0 decision.

GAME ONE

Graves set the tone early with four dominating innings of work on the hill. The southpaw fanned seven of the first eight batters of the game and allowed only one hit. He finished with eight strikeouts and no walks to record his first win of the season.

Blake Kelley laced a two-out double into the right field gap in the bottom of the first inning and scored on a single to left by Zach Hamby. RSU tacked on another run in the second when Rob Rodriguez singled and scored on a two-out hit by Hank Gray.

The two early runs were more than enough cushion for Graves and Baez. Baez faced the minimum number of batters in the final three innings to record his first save. He induced the Coyotes into seven groundball outs, including one double-play, and gave up just one hit.

Casey Barnes suffered the loss for KWU after giving up two runs on four hits in five innings of work.

GAME TWO

The Diamond Cats blew the nightcap open in the second inning with seven runs. RSU sent 12 hitters to the plate in the inning and capitalized on five walks issued by Coyotes' starter Dale Harder. Hamby, Brandon Denton, Ryan Littlejohn and Coby Wright all tallied run-scoring hits in the frame.

Joe Manbodh led off the third inning with a double and courtesy runner Tyler Harold came around to score on a single to left by Luis Caraballo. Joe Faircloth picked up the final RBI of the afternoon when he plated Wright on a hard single to left field in the fourth.

Walker tossed 5.2 strong innings to earn his first win of the spring. He yielded six hits with three strikeouts. Taylor escaped a bases loaded jam in the sixth and pitched around a one-out single in the seventh to keep the shutout intact.

Wright collected a third of the Hillcats nine hits with a 3-for-3 effort. Mandbodh had two hits and Littlejohn tallied three RBI. Harder took the loss for KWU after giving up seven earned runs in just two innings of work.

Rogers State (5-1) ran its winning streak to five games with the doubleheader sweep over KWU. The two teams will reconvene Sunday for another twin bill at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
