Softball Hillcats Lose Two at Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas - Rogers State lost consecutive games for the first time all season as the No. 5 Hillcats were swept in a doubleheader by No. 3 Lubbock Christian at Plains Capital Park in Lubbock, Texas, Sunday.

RSU was blanked 7-0 in the opener before losing a 7-6 heartbreaker in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

LCU banged out 13 hits and Marissa Gonzalez silenced the Hillcat offense in the opener.

The Lady Chaps took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after a dropped fly ball allowed Ginalee Davis to score with two outs. Honda Rodriguez and Raquel Hawkins both walked to start the LCU third. Rodriguez scored on a single by Davis and Hawkins trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Parsons.

Parsons ripped a two-RBI double in the fifth and Hawkins singled home Rodriguez in the bottom of the sixth to reach the final margin, 7-0.

Gonzalez scattered three Hillcat singles across seven innings of work. She tallied seven strikeouts and surrendered three walks while improving her record to 21-3. Kelli Dunagan (20-5) took the loss for RSU after allowing four runs (three earned) over three innings.

GAME TWO

A walk-off single by Daniela Garcia in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a see-saw battle between the two Top 5 programs in the nightcap.

The Lady Chaps overcame an early 4-0 deficit to claim a 6-4 lead after six innings. The Hillcats responded with two runs in the top of the seventh to extend the game. Jade Espinoza delivered a pinch-hit single with one out in the seventh and promptly stole second base to set the stage for Garcia. Garcia ripped a 2-2 pitch from Jenny Johnson into right field to score Espinoza and complete the sweep for LCU.

Junior Randi Tyler got the Cats going in the top of the second inning. She singled to center field to start the inning and scored on a double by Sara Walkup. Tanya Koch drew a walk and Chasidy Austin was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lillian Nevarez and Marie Gaudet followed with RBI base hits to give RSU a four-run lead.

The Lady Chaps climbed back with single runs in the second and third innings and two in the bottom of the fourth. Kelly Griego homered to start the LCU fourth and a two-out error allowed Garcia to score to tie the game, 4-4.

The game appeared to be slipping away from the Hillcats as two hits and an error led to a two-run sixth for the Lady Chaps. With their backs against the wall, the Cats answered the bell in the top of the seventh. Nevarez and Gaudet drew back-to-back walks to start the inning and Tyler followed with a two-run single to retie the game, 6-6.

Jenny Johnson (12-1) suffered her first loss of the season after relieving Dunagan in the bottom of the sixth. She allowed one run on three hits in one inning of relief. Gonzalez (22-3) earned her second win of the day with four innings in the circle for LCU. Nevarez and Tyler had two hits apiece for the Hillcats while Gaudet added two RBI.

Rogers State (32-6, 11-3) remains tied for first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings with Oklahoma City. The Hillcats will take four days off before traveling to Edmond to face Oklahoma Christian Friday. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
