Diamond Cats Sweep Oklahoma Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Rogers State wrapped up fourth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference with a doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Christian on the final day of the regular season Saturday in Oklahoma City.

The Hillcats pounded out 30 hits en route to run-rule victories of 12-2 and 17-2 at Dobson Field. Blake Kelley clubbed two home runs to post a new school record with 13 for the season.

Rogers State (34-14, 19-11) completed its first regular season of SAC competition with an impressive showing. Only nationally top-ranked Lubbock Christian, No. 4 Oklahoma City and No. 11 Wayland Baptist finished ahead of the Hillcats in the standings. RSU will begin play in the conference tournament Tuesday in Plainview, Texas. The Hillcats will play Oklahoma Baptist in the opening round at 4 p.m. The game can be heard live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.

GAME ONE

Kelley hit two long balls and Zach Hamby added three hits as RSU picked up a 12-2 victory in the opener.

Greg Speed led off the top of the first inning with a single through the left side and Kelley followed with a homer to left field. Hamby and Coby Wright roped back-to-back doubles in the third to give RSU a 5-1 lead. After a Speed double, Kelley cranked his second home run of the day in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The sophomore shortstop set a new mark for single season homers with 13 in his first year at RSU.

A five-run sixth inning capped off the scoring barrage in Game 1 and halted the contest via the run-rule. Hamby, Wright and Travis Harold drove in runs during the onslaught. Seven Hillcats enjoyed multi-hit games while Kelley tallied five RBI.

Freshman Sam Cornell (6-2) earned the win with five innings of work. He allowed one run on two hits while striking out six.

GAME TWO

A 10-run third inning quickly turned the nightcap into a laugher as the Cats won going away, 17-2.

Travis Harold's grand slam put an exclamation point on the 10-run frame and put RSU in front, 14-0. Hamby got the Hillcats on the scoreboard with a two-RBI single in the first. Brandon Denton followed suit in the second inning to make it 4-0. Six hits, three walks and an error led to the double digit third for RSU. After two walks and an OC error to start the inning, Tyler Henderson made the Eagles pay with a bases clearing double. Speed, Denton, Kelley and Hamby all ripped run-scoring hits before Harold's four-run blast.

The Hillcats tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth to reach the final margin, 17-2. Henderson paced the offense by going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Speed, Denton, Hamby and Harold had two hits apiece.

Tyler Whitaker (6-2) picked up his tenth career win at RSU by pitching three scoreless innings. Joe Hardzog and Shawn Epps tossed one-inning apiece out of the bullpen.
