Hillcats Bounce Lady Bison in Doubleheader

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State topped Oklahoma Baptist in a pair of competitive softball games at the Hillcat Complex Tuesday.

Kelli Dunagan tossed a complete game shutout in the opener to lift RSU to a 3-0 victory. OBU scored in just one inning all afternoon. The Lady Bison tied the game 2-2 with two runs in the third inning of the nightcap before the Cats stormed back to claim a 5-2 win.

RSU extended its winning streak to eight games and has won 19 of its last 20. The Hillcats improved to 30-4 and 9-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.

GAME ONE

Poor defense by the Lady Bison made things easy on RSU in the series opener. OBU committed five errors on the infield, leading to three Hillcat runs.

Randi Tyler singled up the middle in the second inning and reached second on a fielder's choice error. She scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by Tanya Koch. The Cats added a run in the third inning with the help of two errors by OBU third baseman Bobbie Day. Lilly Nevarez singled and scored in the fifth to reach the final margin, 3-0.

Dunagan (19-4) tallied her seventh complete game shutout of the season with seven strong innings. She scattered six hits and struck out five while yielding just one walk. With the win Dunagan matched her win total from 2007 when she posted a 19-6 record.

GAME TWO

The Lady Bison hung tough will the Hillcats in the nightcap before falling short, 5-2.

Junior Randi Tyler belted her second homer of the spring over the left-center field wall in the bottom of the first inning to put RSU in front, 2-0. OBU answered with two runs in the top of third when Kaley Dickerson delivered a two-out, two-run single to right field.

Marie Gaudet walked to start the Hillcat fourth and Katie Bointy followed with an RBI single. Chasidy Austin chipped in with a single up the middle to score Bointy and give the Cats a 4-2 advantage. Sara Walkup's RBI single in the fifth capped the scoring and put RSU comfortably in front, 5-2.

Jenny Johnson (11-0) earned the win with four innings of scoreless relief. She surrendered just two hits while recording three strikeouts.

No. 10 Rogers State (30-4, 9-1) remains in first place in the conference standings with the sweep of the Lady Bison. The Hillcats will host Mid-America Christian in a doubleheader Thursday at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. and the games will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
