Softball Cats Earn Pair of 1-0 Victories

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team pulled out a pair of 1-0 victories Sunday at the Hillcat Complex.

Junior Megan Wood delivered the game-winning hit in the first game of the day against Kansas Wesleyan. The Claremore native belted a two-out RBI single up the middle to plate Randi Tyler in the bottom of the fourth inning. Katie Bointy was the hero in game two as she cranked a walk-off homer to beat Columbia College in the bottom of the seventh.

Sophomore Kelli Dunagan pitched 14 scoreless innings on the day for the Hillcats to earn two 1-0 decisions.

GAME ONE

Dunagan was nearly perfect against Kansas Wesleyan in the opener. Heather Watson doubled to center field in the top of the first inning for the Lady Coyotes. It was the only hit of the game allowed by the Collinsville High School product. Dunagan racked up 10 strikeouts without yielding a walk to earn her tenth win of the season.

Her counterpart Katie Coker held the Hillcats to just one run on three hits over seven innings. However, Wood's RBI single in the fourth stood up for the final three innings. RSU's trio of veterans - Tyler, Dunagan and Wood - each tallied a hit for the Cats.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats continued to struggle at the plate against Columbia College in the nightcap but came away with another win. RSU managed just two hits before Bointy's dramatic game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.

Dunagan turned in another brilliant performance in Game 2. She surrendered only one hit, a single by Kacey Rehagen in the second inning, while totaling four strikeouts.

The game appeared headed for extra innings with two outs and the bases empty in the Hillcat seventh. The outlook changed in an instant when Bointy ripped an inside pitch from Valerie Teter over the left field wall and just inside the foul pole to secure the victory. It was the team-leading third home run of the season for Bointy and the fourth consecutive one-run victory for the Hillcats.

Dunagan (11-3) picked up her second win of the day with another seven-inning shutout. Wood and Marie Gaudet joined Bointy with a hit against the Cougars.

Rogers State (15-3) won its fourth straight and improved to 8-2 in one-run games this season. The Hillcats hit the road Tuesday for a conference match-up with Southern Nazarene. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
