SHAWNEE, Okla. - Zach Hamby belted his ninth home run of the season in the seventh inning to push Rogers State passed Oklahoma Baptist and claim a series victory for the Hillcats at Bison Field Saturday.
Â
After coming up on the short end of a 10-8 slugfest in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, the Cats were in a must-win situation entering the series finale. RSU trailed 4-3 before Hamby's heroics sparked a three-run seventh and the Hillcats held on for a 6-4 victory.
Â
RSU pulled out an 8-7 decision over OBU at the Hillcat Complex Thursday and took two-of-three games in a very competitive conference series.
GAME ONE
Â
The Hillcats scored eight times over the first five innings before OBU reliever Jordan McCavitt silenced the RSU offense.
Â
Travis Harold gave the Cats an 8-6 lead with a two-run homer to left field in the top of the fifth. McCavitt came on in relief of Chase Jestice and kept RSU off the scoreboard while recording the final nine outs. The Bison tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Chris Chambers and then took the lead on a two-run bomb off the bat of Joshua Collazo in the sixth. Freshman Sam Cornell, who was the hero against OBU Thursday night, surrendered both long balls.
Â
The Hillcats scored four runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Blake Kelley, Coby Wright and Brandon Denton each tallied RBI singles in the inning. OBU responded with three runs in the bottom of the first off RSU starter Josh Walker as Chambers roped a two-RBI double to center field.
Â
The Cats plated a run in each of the next two innings as Hamby and Randy Jones delivered RBI hits. The Bison put together a three-run fourth inning to create a 6-6 tie and chase Walker from the game. Harold's fifth inning homer gave the Cats a lift, but Cornell was unable to keep OBU at bay.
Â
McCavitt (4-0) earned the win with three innings of scoreless relief. He scattered two hits and picked up three strikeouts without allowing a walk. Cornells (3-1) suffered his first loss after allowing four earned runs in two innings of work. Speed and Harold tallied three hits apiece for RSU while Chambers led OBU by going 3-for-4 with four RBI.
GAME TWO
Â
The Hillcats trailed 2-0 before rallying for three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Salsbury led off the inning with a single and scored on a double by Tyler Henderson. Speed reached on an error and Ryan Littlejohn put the Cats in front with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
Â
The Bison answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth when RSU reliever Brett Trzcinski ran into some trouble. Trzcinski hit Mason Reilly to start the inning and issued a walk to Frank Avilla. Cody Lambeth and Whitt Barkley followed with back-to-back RBI singles to put OBU in front, 5-4. Freshman Matt Brimer struck out Josh Kirkpatrick to end the inning and avoid any further damage.
Â
Littlejohn doubled to start the Hillcat seventh and Hamby followed with his second home run of the series. Salsbury gave RSU an insurance run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Wright to make it 6-4 in favor of the Hillcats. Ryan White worked a scoreless seventh inning to earn his third save. Brimer (2-1) earned the win by recording the final out of the sixth.
Â
Rogers State (19-11, 10-10) earned its third conference series win by taking two-of-three from OBU. The Hillcats have played the top six teams in the SAC with three-game sets against three of the bottom four teams remaining on the schedule.
