Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Hillcats Split with Northwestern

ALVA, Okla. - Rogers State earned its second conference series win of the season with a 13-6 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State at Ranger Field in Alva Saturday.

The Rangers came roaring back with a 14-4 run-rule victory in the nightcap to salvage one game of the three-game series. With a stout wind favoring the hitters, the two teams combined for nine home runs on the day. Northwestern took home run derby honors as the Rangers cranked seven of the nine long balls.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats scored at least three runs in four different innings en route to a 13-6 win in the first game of the day. RSU took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a three-run homer by Ryan Littlejohn. The Cats added four runs in the fourth inning and led 9-1 after a three-run double by Blake Kelley. That was more than enough cushion for RSU starter Josh Walker. The right-handed sophomore allowed just one earned run over five innings of work to pick up his second win of the season.

The Cats added three runs in the fifth and three more in the seventh to reach the final margin. Brandon Denton and Randy Jones had two hits apiece for RSU while Littlejohn and Kelley tallied three RBI.

GAME TWO

Northwestern belted four home runs in the first three innings to make quick work of the Hillcats in final game of the series.

After enduring lopsided losses in each of the first two games against the Cats, the Ranger offense sprung to life in the finale. Northwestern reached RSU starter Tyler Whitaker for nine runs, eight earned, in the first two innings of the game. Angel Hernandez delivered a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to put Northwestern on top 5-1. Chris Glass followed with a three-run bomb in the second inning to stretch the lead to eight-runs.

Zach Hamby belted a three-run homer for RSU in the third inning, but it wasn't nearly enough. Northwestern answered with four runs off of Ryan White in the bottom of the third and tacked on a final run in the fourth inning. The Rangers tallied 13 hits in just four at-bats. Northwestern starter Brandon Walker held the Hillcats to four runs on four hits over five innings of work. Whitaker (1-2) suffered the loss and lasted just two innings for the second consecutive outing.

Rogers State (10-5, 4-4) earned its conference series victory in three opportunities this season. The Hillcats will play a makeup game against Oklahoma City University Tuesday at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
