Flying Queens Soar Past RSU Women, 75-63

PLAINVIEW, Texas - Wayland Baptist doubled up Rogers State in the first half and easily avenged a one-point loss to the Hillcats in January with a 75-63 win at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview Saturday.

The Flying Queens put together a 10-0 run midway through the first half and closed the period on a 24-7 run. WBU shot 50-percent in the first half while the Hillcats struggled to score the ball. RSU managed to shoot just 23-percent from the floor and trailed 40-20 at the break.

The Hillcats closed the game on a 15-5 run to make the margin of victory respectable. Junior Azzie Knox had a season-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting for RSU. Hayley KnifeChief added 15 points and hit four 3-pointers. However, no other Hillcat player reached double figures.

The Flying Queens controlled the boards with a 40-32 rebounding advantage and dished out 22 assists compared to just 10 for the Hillcats. Vanita Wright led all scorers with 20 points while Megan Coats added 15 and Shelby Conrad contributed 14.

RSU defeated the Queens 57-56 in a highly contested game at the Claremore Expo Jan. 3. WBU pulled to within a half game of the Hillcats in the conference standings with the victory. After the loss RSU finds itself in a tie with Oklahoma Christian for sixth place in the SAC.

The Hillcats will return home next week to begin a three-game homestand at the Claremore Expo. RSU will welcome USAO to Claremore Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Public Television and RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
