Hillcats Claim Saturday Sweep from York College

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State earned a series win over York College (York, Neb.) with a doubleheader sweep of the Panthers Saturday afternoon at the Hillcat Complex.

The Hillcats banged out 14 hits in the first game of the day and held York to a single run in Game 2. RSU won via a six inning run-rule in Game 1 as it plated 13 runs in the final three innings to win, 15-5. The Cats jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the nightcap and cruised to a 5-1 win to take three of four games in the series.

GAME ONE

RSU trailed York 3-2 before putting together a seven-run fourth inning to blow the game open. The Panthers used three pitchers in the frame as the Hillcats tallied five hits and sent 12 hitters to the plate. Coby Wright delivered the knockout punch with a three-run double to make it 9-3. Sophomore starter Josh Walker turned in a solid performance to pick up the win with four innings of work. His only blemish was a three-run third as the Panthers touched him for three hits in the inning.

The Hillcats added three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to halt the game early with a 10-run lead. Brandon Denton and Greg Speed picked up three hits apiece in the top two spots in the batting order. Wright plated five RBI with a double and a single while Blake Kelley added three RBI.

Freshman Matt Brimer worked the final two innings on the mound for RSU, allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

For the fourth time in as many games the Hillcats scored and took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Speed reached after being hit by a pitch and Ryan Littlejohn followed with a walk. Kelley drove both runners home with a single up the middle to give RSU an early 2-0 advantage.

The two-run lead was more than enough cushion for junior southpaw Chris Graves who breezed through four innings of work. Graves tossed four shutout innings and allowed only three hits while striking out four to earn his first win. Sophomore Grant Cosby pitched the final three innings and allowed just one run to secure the win for the Hillcats.

Kelley extended the lead to 3-0 with his first homer of the season, a laser down the left field line, in the bottom of the third. Kelley finished 3-for-3 in Game 2 and tallied six RBI in the Saturday doubleheader. The Hillcats would pick up tack-on runs in the fourth and sixth innings to reach the final margin, 5-1.

Rogers State (3-1) will jump into Sooner Athletic Conference play for the first time Tuesday against Southern Nazarene. The Hillcats will travel to Bethany to face the Crimson Storm in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
