Hillcats Hold off Lubbock Christian, 69-65

LUBBOCK, Texas - Lubbock Christian erased a 19-point second half deficit and nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback before falling short against Rogers State, 69-65 at the Rip Griffin Center Thursday night.

The Hillcats led 38-25 at the half and grew their lead to 19 points early in the second stanza. The Chaparrals began to quickly chip away at the lead as Kenny Hewitt and Bernardo Rocha combined for 19 second half points. Munir Shakir buried a 3-pointer to tie the game 60-60 and the Chaps appeared poised to complete the comeback. However, the Hillcats kept their cool, went on a 7-0 run, and made their free throws in the closing seconds to hold on for the win.

Junior point guard Aldric Reynolds turned in what Coach Wren Baker called "his most complete game as a Hillcat." The Houston native finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. He hit 7-of-8 free throws and dished out five assists compared to just one turnover in 35 minutes of action. Bryson Krueger led RSU with 15 points, Eric Young added 13.

Hewitt led all scorers with 18 points followed by Rocha with 17. It was the fourth straight loss for LCU while the Hillcats improved their winning streak to four games.

Rogers State (13-7, 8-6) moved into a tie for fourth place in the conference standings. Oklahoma Baptist was upset at home by Oklahoma Christian Thursday night, leaving the Bison and Hillcats deadlocked at 8-6. RSU will complete its Texas road trip against No. 12 Wayland Baptist Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. and the game will be carried live on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
