Softball Cats Split with Dana College

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State drubbed Dana College (Blair, Neb.) in the Game 1 but managed just one hit in the nightcap and settled for a split at the Hillcat Complex Friday afternoon.

The Hillcats banged out nine hits and cruised to a 7-0 win in the first game of the day. However, Dana starter Cassie Lager silenced the RSU offense in Game 2 and snapped the Hillcats 10-game winning streak with a 2-1 win.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats scored in each of the first four innings en route to 7-0 win in Game 1. Kelli Dunagan and Jenny Johnson combined to throw a one-hit shutout against the Vikings, who were playing their first game of the season.

RSU sent eight hitters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Lillian Nevarez singled to right field to start the frame and Marie Gaudet followed with a bunt single. Dana starter Josie Barrow issued back-to-back walks to Dunagan and Katie Bointy to push the first run across for the Hillcats. Megan Wood executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score Gaudet and give RSU a 2-0 lead.

Randi Tyler delivered an RBI single to right in the second inning and Sarah Walkup and Nevarez plated runs in the third to stretch the lead to 5-0. Gaudet and Dunagan roped doubles in the fourth to give RSU a 6-0 advantage. Dunagan added another double in the sixth and scored the final run of the game by stealing home. She led the Hillcats nine-hit attack with three knocks. Nevarez and Gaudet had two hits apiece.

Dunagan picked up the win with four innings of work. She allowed just one hit and struck out six. Johnson held the Vikings hitless over the final three innings.

GAME TWO

Dana College scored two unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead after five innings. TJ Beeman led off the third with a single and scored on an error by Gaudet. Lindy Bohlman walked to start the fifth, advanced to third on an error and gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead on a squeeze bunt by Jesse McKinney.

The Hillcats finally broke through with their first hit and cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth. Sara Walkup worked a walk to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Mandy Clark moved from first to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Gaudet. Dunagan followed with a single down the line, but Dana starter Cassie Lager got Tyler and Bointy to pop up and end the threat.

Lager retired the Cats in order in the seventh to record a complete game victory. Dunagan (7-3) took the loss despite allowing just two hits and no earned runs over seven innings.

No. 18 Rogers State (11-3) lost for the first time in 10 days. The Hillcats will host defending national champion and No. 1 Oklahoma City University Tuesday at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
