CLAREMORE, Okla. - Rogers State clubbed four home runs and tossed back-to-back shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Wesleyan at Hillcat Field on Tuesday.
Megan Wood led off the bottom of the first inning of Game 1 with a homer over the left field wall and the route was on. The Hillcats added a run in the third inning and four more in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double by Wood.
Sydni Jones delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run homer, giving RSU the win via run-rule, 9-0. Kelli Dunagan improved to 4-0 with a five-inning complete-game shutout. She allowed one hit and just three base runners while striking out 10.
The offense continued for the Hillcats in Game 2. Five consecutive hits to start the bottom of the first inning led to four RSU runs. The Hillcats added four more runs in the bottom of the second as Taylor Whisenhunt hammered her third home run of the season deep over the left field fence. Randi Tyler clubbed her first long ball of the season in the bottom of the fourth as RSU scored five more times to reach the final margin, 14-0. Stephanie Eggers (4-1) earned the complete game victory with five strong innings of work. She allowed just one hit while fanning six.
RSU (8-1) out hit the Lady Eagles 23-2 in the doubleheader. Bridgett Stewart and Megan Wood paced the Hillcats with four hits a piece on the afternoon. Coach Dawn Reed's club leaves Wednesday morning for Orange Beach, Ala., where it will face several top 25 programs in the Gulf Coast Invitational this weekend. The next home game for the softball Hillcats is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 14.
