Hillcats Win Streak Continues at Wayland Baptist, 5-3

PLAINVIEW, Texas - The Rogers State men's soccer team opened Sooner Athletic Conference play with a 5-3 win over Wayland Baptist Tuesday afternoon in Plainview.

The Hillcats jumped in front, 5-1 and were never threatened as they extended their record winning streak to nine games. Des Fitzgerald scored three goals in his first game since being named NAIA National Player of the Week. Fitzgerald has now scored at least one goal in his last six matches and in the process set a new RSU single-season record for goals with 12.

Ryan Coffman gave the Hillcats the early lead with a goal in the 18th minute on an assist from Henrique Sousa. Carlos Zuta made it 2-0 in the 25th minute and then set up Fitzgerald for his first goal of the match a minute later.

Roberto Ponce broke up the shutout for the Pioneers when he converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute. Fitzgerald opened the second half scoring with a penalty kick goal of his own less than three minutes in. The Englishmen capped the Cats' scoring barrage by completing the hat trick on another assist from Zuta in the 68th minute.

Wayland tacked on a pair of late goals against RSU reserve goalie Nikola Samac. Sean Surridge earned the win with two saves in more than 83 minutes between the posts.

Rogers State (9-1) will endure its biggest test of the season Saturday as the Hillcats travel to Oklahoma City to face the No. 14 Stars at 8 p.m.
