CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State men's soccer (10-5-2, 7-4 GAC/MIAA) took care of business in a 3-0 win over Newman (4-9-3, 3-7-1 GAC/MIAA) on Senior Night Thursday.
Â
Two Hillcats found their way onto the scoresheet, with
Marcos Vasallo scoring his league-leading 11th and 12th goals of the season while
Hugo Martin scored his fifth. Senior
Blake Classen (2-0) earned the first clean sheet of his career making three saves.
Â
The first half was a defensive back and forth with neither side finding much in the way of success on the offensive attack. The Hillcats edged out the Jets with seven shots to six in the period, including both sides taking a shot apiece on goal. Newman had opportunities with five corner kicks in the first 45 minutes and had no success as all five were immediately cleared out of the box. The Hillcats broke the stalemate in the 38th minute as Vasallo fired in a shot off a cross from
Alex Laing to go up 1-0 headed into the break.
Â
The final 45 minutes saw RSU crank up the offensive attack as outshot the Jets 8-5 with three shots on target to two. Vasallo struck again in the 53rd minute as he headed in a ball off a throw in from
Matthew Sweetman deep into the Hillcats offensive third of the field. Nearly 90 seconds later, Martin got in on the scoring fun as he laced a shot through several Jet defenders from almost 25 yards out to put the game away at 3-0.
Â
RSU will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 4 as they welcome Fort Hays State inside the friendly confines of Solider Field for the regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
